Tax Updates
FICA Rate Update
Congress and the President extended the 4.2% OASDI (Social Security) employee rate through 2012. The IRS released revised Form 941 enabling employers to properly report the newly-extended payroll tax cut.
FUTA Rate Update
The FUTA tax credit claimed by Pennsylvania employers when calculating the FUTA tax rate has been reduced from 5.4% to 5.1%. The FUTA tax rate for 2012 (and retroactively to 2011) is .9% (.8% in 2010). The .9% is comprised of the .6% (07/01/11) rate plus the .3% credit reduction. The additional 2011 tax will be collected when employers file their 2011 annual Form 940. The first $7,000 of wages is subject to this tax.
The increase in tax rate (decrease in tax credit) was enacted because Pennsylvania has a two year outstanding loan balance with the federal government that was used to pay for unemployment benefits. If this balance remains unpaid in 2012, the rate will increase another .3% (credit will be reduced to 4.8%).
